Three Things Thursday: Funemployment!

1. Unemployment is glorious when you actually have a job lined up. I’m think I’m going to call it Funemployment from now on! I am taking in these final days of nothingness like a champ. Yesterday I ran 5.5 miles on the Mt. Vernon Trail and then promptly sat on my a$$ all afternoon.

scaled.jpg

(Proof that I actually did something. Pretty Potomac.)

Seriously, I watched 500 Days of Summer and ate popcorn. That was it. Sometimes productivity is just overrated.

2. Part II of funemployment comes today. I figure one productive thing a day is going to be my maximum allowance. Today I’m spending it on cleaning my car. It needs a deep cleaning after a road trip across the country (think pretzel crumbs everywhere!) and driving in circles around D.C. and Alexandria trying to find my way around.

P6160067.JPG

(It was a long trip…)

I’ll have it shining like it just rolled off the lot in no time. After that I plan to relish in my accomplishment at the pool. Busy day around here you guys, try to keep up.

3. I get bored very easily without a schedule. So while you were out being all productive and what not I spent the evening on my computer scouring Amazon for my next book. Amazon is my downfall. Seriously, 1-click and it’s ordered…what’s not to love? Oh yea, the part where my bank account cries because I lack all self control.

After a serious conversation with Smutha Mutha discussing the pros and cons of purchasing a Kindle (we decided the time is not right, if you were wondering), I decided on two books.

Sometimes I just don’t want to think all that hard. These two books should ensure that happens.

It Happened. It Really Happened!

You guys. Big news. HUGE. If you haven’t been stalking me on Facebook or Twitter lately (shame on you) then let me go ahead and share the news: I GOT THE JOB!

This is so much bigger than I can fathom at this point. But let me just go ahead and say that this is the job I was after. Like the one that put my plan to move to DC into motion. When I received word that I had been selected for a 2nd interview something just clicked and I knew I had to move. Fortunately my intuition was not wrong and I was able to breathe a HUGE sigh of relief once I received word that I was chosen for the position. I can’t wait to start!

Before I got word of the great news I started the day with a tough workout that I found on Marisa’s blog! It’s called the 100 workout and it goes a little something like this:

100workout_thumb.jpg

In addition to the stated workout I added on 25 pushups and an extra 40 minutes of cardio. I was feeling like an overachiever today. :) I did a combination of walking/running intervals based on how I felt. In total I completed 3.65 miles. A far cry from my days of 13.1 but I’ll get back there eventually. I was starving by the time I was done so I whipped up a quick smoothie in a bowl.

P6280016.JPG

But it was gross and sour (I think the blueberries were bad) so I actually ended up throwing most of it away. I rarely throw food away (because I am cheap) but this was too bad even for me! After mourning the loss of perfectly good ingredients I went with an old standby.

P6270001.JPG

Hello love. In the mix: 1/4 cup oat bran, 1/2 cup water, 1 tbsp flaxseed, and 1 tbsp PB.

Most of the afternoon was spent relishing the feeling of accomplishment that comes with securing employment post-college. :) I called the parental units first. Chef Bob nearly made me cry. I could hear the pride in his voice. He didn’t have to say anything.

And Smutha Mutha…well you all know my mother has a flare for the dramatics so as not to disappoint she sat down in the middle of a mall and started bawling. She said my stress was her stress and that she was just so proud and relieved she couldn’t help but cry. All signs of proper parenting if you ask me. :) She’s just the best.

After catching up with all the important people in my life my future roomie and I headed for dinner at a local D.C. spot I heard about when I last lived here but never had time to visit. Busboys and Poets is somewhat of an underground D.C. institution. In their own words the restaurant is “…a place to take a deliberate pause and feed your mind, body and soul…” so that is what we did!

The menu.

Beautiful decor. Crappy photography.

P6280032.JPG

Well deserved wine. Ahhh.

P6280027.JPG

Shyna’s drink of choice: “D.C. Tapwater…” funny, huh?

P6280031.JPG

We started with the hummus appetizer. Because if there is one thing I definitely don’t eat enough of, it’s hummus. (Sarcasm font would be great right about now…)

Then it was time for the stars of the evening.

For Shyna:

Peanut Butter and Banana sandwich with agave nectar on a French loaf.

And for me:

P6280034.JPG P6280035.JPG

The tempeh sandwich with vegan mayo (on the side), arugula, roasted red peppers, and sauteed onions on multigrain bread. I ordered a side salad rather than sweet potato fries. And I saved half of my sandwich for leftovers! Aren’t you proud?

Despite some less than stellar service from our waitress the meal was amazing. We reveled in our accomplishments (Shyna’s first day of work is today!) and talked a lot about the future. Things are looking up and I am so excited to see what comes next!

Questions: What was your first real job after college? How long did it take you to gain employment?

Fit Tip Tuesday: Stretches for Everyone!

The majority of us work hard to make fitness a priority. But at times it feels as though there are barely enough hours in the day to get everything accomplish let alone sneak in a workout. When we get to the gym our goals are pretty clear: Break a sweat, get our heart rates up, and build some muscles. While these priorities are great on their own, the time crunch that affects us all rarely leaves time for one of the most important components of a well rounded fitness routine: Stretching.

There are many reasons why stretching is a vital component of exercise. Most importantly, regular stretching may help you improve your flexibility and decrease your risk of injury. Benefits of stretching may also be felt immediately as it helps release lactic acid buildup, increases blood flow to the muscles, and may provide a larger range of motion in your joints.

Many great stretches exist for all types of people. From athletes to office workers, everyone can benefit from performing a stretching routine. Here are a couple of my favorites:

Yoga Inspired:

Ragdoll: Responsible for stretching the hamstrings and lengthening the spine, this is one of my all time favorite stretches. I recommend it for clients of all fitness backgrounds for the release it provides to the low back.

(source)

Begin performing this stretch with bent knees and feet hip width distance apart. Over time, work on straightening your knees but never locking them fully. For an added bonus, rock slowly side to side.

Downward Facing Dog: Known as the resting pose in the midst of a vinyasa flow, this pose is great for relieving lower back pain and releasing tight calf muscles while simultaneously lengthening the hamstrings and arms.

(source)

To perform this stretch begin on your hangs and knees. From there, slowly lift your knees away from the floor keeping them slightly bent. Simultaneously lengthen your arms releasing the shoulders away from the ears. The goal is to try to form your body into an upside down V. You can read more details about downward facing dog by clicking the link.

At the Office:

Reverse Arch Stretch: After a long day hunched in front of a computer screen your spine can certainly use a break. This stretch allows you to open up the front part of your body and renews tissue circulation.

chair4-1.jpg

(source)

To perform this stretch, scooch to the edge of your chair and place your hands behind you. Take a deep inhale breath and open up your chest, keeping your shoulders away from your ears.

After Exercise:

Piriformis Stretch: The Piriformis muscle is responsible for the outward rotation of the hip. It is an important muscle for most athletes, particularly those that must change their course of direction quickly during performances. Overall, it is a very important muscle to keep loose.

piriformis_stretch.jpg

(source)

To stretch this set of of muscles, lie on your back and cross your right ankle over the left knee. Take a hold of your ‘under’ leg and pull your bent knee toward your chest. You should feel the stretch in your butt and hips. (technical terms, obviously)

There are many stretches beyond what I have highlighted here that may be incorporated into your daily life and/or fitness routine. It does not have to take long but if done on a regular basis, stretching may help alleviate some of the aches and pains you feel in everyday life or after the gym.

As always, if you have any questions regarding the information in this post, don’t hesitate to contact me at jennifer@knackfornutrition.com.

Question: What is your favorite stretch? Mine is downward facing dog. I find it invigorating and relaxing at the same time!

Shaking off the Monday blues.

Catching up from the weekend? Me too! Here’s anything you may have missed!

Suck It Up Saturday: “If We Fail, All is Not Lost.”

Homeless and jobless but still smiling!

~

So I’ve begun to sound a bit like a broken record about things that are out of my control. But that is not how I want to enter the new week. I want to focus on positive thoughts and the opportunities that are bound to come with my decision to relocate. For instance the fact that I actually slept in this morning and that is why my post is a bit late. :) Or the possibility that I may actually be finding my running mojo again…

P6260004.JPG

(Pre-run snack: 1 slice Ezekiel bread, 1 tbsp almond butter, banana, cinnamon)

Yesterday I got up and out the door without giving a second thought to all of the other things I “should be doing.” I ran around my new neighborhood and explored all the beauty that Old Town, Alexandria is hiding around every corner.

P6260008.JPG

(This would be a pre-run picture. You know things got way sweatier once I got moving!)

I finished up 4.25 miles of negative splits (!) in 43:00 and carried my runner’s high through most of the early afternoon.

P6260009.JPG P6260010.JPG

(Post run brunch: 1/2 cup greek yogurt, 1/2 cup cereal, peach, handful of blueberries, and 1/2 tbsp chia seeds.)

The rest of the day was spent doing decidedly more stressful activities…i.e. coming to terms with precisely how different the cost of living is in Washington, D.C. versus Little Rock, Arkansas. I think It’s going to take me a bit to get over the sticker shock.

P6260013.JPG

But today is a new day, right? So all of those overwhelming thoughts are left for yesterday. Today I am embracing my situation and savoring my good fortune of being able to sleep in, sip a warm cup of coffee, and complete my yoga for runner’s podcast on my time frame.

  P6260023.JPG

(Dinner Part 1: Spinach salad with tomato, hard-boiled egg, carrots, feta cheese, hummus, and balsamic vinaigrette.)

P6260027.JPG

(Dinner Part 2: Just keeping it real with leftover roasted broccoli hidden under a mountain of nutritional yeast and ketchup. You say disgusting, I say delicious!)

I’m quickly learning that things are only as bad as you make them out to be. Being unsettled takes an adjustment period just like anything else. It is all about perspective. With that in mind, I want to leave you all with some inspiring words to carry throughout your day.

“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. “

~Max Planck

Question: What is your favorite uplifting or inspiring quote? If enough people share in the comments I may put together a post and I will link back to your blog! What do you think?

Homeless and jobless but still smiling.

I can’t express to you guys how much more at ease I feel with my old roommate by my side. The stress of our situations is no laughing matter, yet going through this with someone else makes everything just a bit more lighthearted. You see, we currently have opposing life stressors:

On one side you have me: Unemployed yet actively pursuing my dream job.

On the other side you have Shyna: Employed but homeless.

We figure that between the two of us we make up a successful college graduate.

Needless to say our Saturday was quite busy between job applications and looking at future homes, both short-term and long-term as we plan to move in together once we both have our lives somewhat together.

Despite the chaos that it involved with researching jobs and housing simultaneously I managed to photograph all of my eats to share on the blog. That has not happened in a very long time!

P6250004.JPG

(Breakfast: 1/2 banana, 1/3 cup oat bran, 1/2 tbsp chia seeds, 1/2 tbsp flax seed, 1/4 cup egg whites, cinnamon, and 1/2 tbsp almond butter.)

With the added stressors that have come with the move I decided that I owed it to myself not to slip into poor nutrition habits. So I went back to basics and wrote down everything I ate today. Accountability is key.

P6250005.JPG

P6250006.JPG

(Lunch: Black bean hummus sandwich on Ezekiel bread with spinach, tomato, and feta. Served alongside PopChips and carrots.)

Our morning and early afternoon was spent in front of the computer screen, so by the time lunch was over I was more than ready to head out and explore our new town. And since you know I love my expensive groceries that meant I headed out with a destination in mind: Whole Foods Alexandria.

P6250009.JPG

($30 Ostrich eggs for sale…No big deal!)

P6250011.JPG

This Whole Foods puts the Little Rock location to shame. It’s like a whole new world in there, you guys. Fortunately I had a gift card (Thank you college graduation!) so I kept the damage to a minimum. I pray that I will soon have the income to afford me the luxury of shopping there because it is amazing! I was in foodie heaven!

After dropping off my haul of groceries, Shyna and I headed back out to check out some apartments. We spent more time driving in circles and yelling at my iPhone for providing crappy directions then actually looking at places, but you win some and you lose some.

Dinner came shortly thereafter and did not disappoint. Wine was not optional.

P6250014.JPG

P6250012.JPGP6250013.JPG

(Dinner: Spinach salad with black beans and the rest of the usual suspects. Served alongside 2 local ears of corn with 1/2 tbsp butter and 1/2 glass white wine.)

I find spending time in the kitchen to be very relaxing admist the chaos that is building a life for myself here. After dinner I chopped up a watermelon and plopped on the couch to do a bit more work.

In all it was a nice little Saturday. I did not exercise (which is no one’s fault but my own) but it is the first thing I plan to do today after hitting publish. There is no room for excuses or failure! (See yesterday’s post for an elaborate description of what I am talking about.) If you don’t hear from me on Monday assume running got the best of me. ;P

Question: How did you spend your Saturday?

Suck It Up Saturday: “If we fail, all is not lost.”

It’s my favorite day of the week! Happy Suck It Up Saturday everyone!

This week’s inspiration comes from Susan Lacke of No Meat Athlete fame. Her experiences as a triathlete are not only motivating but go to show that no one is immune to failure. Her forays in fitness parallel the decisions we make in our daily lives in that what really defines us is how we deal with situations when they don’t go as we anticipate. To say that she is relatable would be an understatement. See for yourself:

“Every endeavor – whether it be your first half-marathon, teaching a child to ride a bike, cooking a complicated recipe, or running a marathon for the 30th time – has the potential for failure. Yet we commit to such acts anyway, because the act of simply trying to be successful at something provides lessons, growth, development, and change. The success itself is just the icing on the cake.

If we fail, all is not lost. Choosing to try again (and, sometimes, yet again), allows us to grow even more…and, someday, when achieved, success becomes that much sweeter.”

From the never ending job hunt to my 4 mile run that felt more like 30, I am no stranger to feeling like a failure. But I am convinced that we must experience things that challenge us to understand exactly what we are capable of. Taking a risk and failing shows that you are willing to grow, change, and adapt. The choices you make on a daily basis may not end up being the right decisions long-term, but knowing that you tried, failed, and kept moving forward is something to be proud of and take with you as you embark on whatever comes next.

Doubt has no place in the mind of someone driven to succeed. There is only what you choose to do and choose not to do. How things end up may not be how you anticipate, but that is kind of the beauty of pushing yourself and taking risks. Failure provides opportunity to show what you are made of.

Question: Have you ever failed at something? How did you grow from the experience?
