Fitbloggin’ Meetup: Suspension Training

Yesterday I had the opportunity to meet up with a fun group of women (and token male trainer) to participate in the first ever local Fitbloggin’ meetup. Roni, fearless leader that she is, took the reigns and organized a great activity for us at Brick Bodies, a local Baltimore area gym.

We did a weight training class called TRX Suspension Training that gave us an opportunity to mingle and sweat (some more than others…I don’t know how to NOT sweat) while trying to look as hardcore as our instructor.

It began innocently enough with a couple of suspension exercises that felt more like stretches. But soon enough I realized that we were not, in fact, messing around and that I was about to get my butt handed to me by some straps hanging from the rafters.

In all seriousness though the class was great. I really liked the challenge of the straps and the fact that you can make each exercise as easy or hard as you want depending on how much of your body weight you use. I would love to incorporate this type of strength training into my normal workout routine, so I am definitely on the look out for a gym that offers these types of classes.

After the class Julie and I had a little coffee date.

She has a great outlook on life and chatting with her was like a breathe of fresh air. I love hanging out with bloggers because you never run out of things to talk about. I could have talked for hours!

Overall, I had a great time at the first local Fitbloggin’ meetup. Thanks again to Roni for planning the festivities and Brick Bodies for providing such a fun workout class!

Free Food on Friday! (Popchips Giveaway!)

Today is a sad day for me (not for you, don’t fret).

“Why so glum?” You may be wondering…

Because after nearly 3 weeks, a trip across the country, and a reliable snacking stand-by whenever a craving struck I have finally run out of my supply of Popchips generously provided by the company.

P6160043

As you guys know, I don’t review or give away anything on this blog unless I really stand behind the product.

That said, I was eating Popchips long before I met a few of the companies representatives at Fitbloggin’ and I will continue to purchase them on my own hard-earned dimes because the chips are that delicious. I’m a bit partial to the Sour Cream and Onion flavor but I really never met a chip I didn’t love so I’ve had no problem working on my box o’ chips.

The reason I choose to eat Popchips over traditional potato chips is because of their top-secret production method that involves heat and pressure rather than frying. The company prides itself on using wholesome, real ingredients that I can actually pronounce! And they taste good…that is key. For these reasons Popchips serves as a great alternative when a snack attack hits!

Okay, so what does this have to do with you? Well the cool people from Popchips have generously offered to give away A MONTHS supply of chips to one lucky reader. You’re going to have Popchips coming out of your ears! (Insert jealous face here!)

There are several ways to enter. Leave a separate comment on this post for each entry.

1. “Like” Popchips on Facebook and leave a comment on their wall letting them know you’re coming from A Knack For Nutrition

2. Follow @Popchips on Twitter and tweet about this giveaway saying something like: “@knack4nutrition is giving away a month’s supply of @popchips. Enter here:

3. Follow me on Facebook and leave a comment letting me know you have done so.

4. Tell me your favorite relatively healthy snack food! I’m always looking for new ideas!

Super easy, huh? I will pick a winner Tuesday, July 5th so get your entries in stat!

Three Things Thursday: Fish Edition

1. I am still feeling the Fitbloggin’ love. From all the people I have met to the generous sponsors of the event, the conference has been like the gift that keeps on giving. Yesterday I received a much-anticipated package from the people at New Balance that contained my new pair of shoes.

detail_hero_template_400x400.jpg

My first pair is way too big so before I left the expo I casually mentioned this to a New Balance representative. She offered to send me a new pair like it was no big deal! I was so excited when the package arrived before work. I wore them throughout my 8 hour shift and my feet felt great. They are super comfortable and pretty lightweight, and they look cool to boot.

2. After work last night I came home to foam roll and watch “True Life: I am Addicted to Food.” (you can watch the episode online by clicking the link).

456x330.jpg

The episode followed two young people who constantly think about eating and feel as though they have no control over what they consume on a daily basis. The episode left me a bit shaken, as there are definitely similarities in my struggles with food. It was hard to watch two people feel so helpless and out of control. But at the same time I feel as though MTV chose to portray two very extreme examples. I wish they had showcased a person that is just a bit more relatable.

3. Finally, on a very serious note I wanted to share a change I have made with you all. After much consideration I have decided to eliminate fish from my diet. Beyond the fact that eating fish labeled me a ‘pescatarian’ rather than a full fledged vegetarian for many years, I can no longer enjoy consuming this type of animal product.

It is a deeply personal and political choice to eliminate seafood from my daily rotation of protein sources. It has always been an easy source of protein to grab in a pinch. But as I researched more about the practices of fish farming and “sustainable” fishing methods, I no longer felt was an appropriate option for me given that a major reason I do not eat meat is because of how animals are treated and raised for human consumption.

P5240006.JPG

So although I posted this picture of a tuna salad just yesterday, it was because I decided to finish what I had in the house (waste not, want not) before going cold turkey (funny pun? you decide). I imagine this decision will be challenging, as it was to give up traditional meat at first, but I will find alternative sources of protein to supplement my seafood consumption in due time.

And on that heavy note, I am headed to the pool. It has been a heck of week so far and I am waited with baited breathe by my phone to hear about some potential job leads. The pool is meant to provide a pleasant distraction so I can’t check my email every 2.2 seconds waiting for an important email. Please keep your fingers crossed for me! :)

Question: How would you label your eating habits? (vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian…)

I should know better…

Thursdays are what I like to call “my day of rest.” Between personal training and my other job as a gym attendant I have some pretty long days. But not on Thursdays. They are all mine.

I woke up yesterday morning to the request of my Smutha Mutha to act as her personal trainer while she ran on the treadmill. After my favorite breakfast and a moment to confess my love of Oprah we headed to the gym for a little one on one time.

P5260005.JPG

(Breakfast: 2 slices Ezekiel bread, 1 tbsp crunchy peanut butter, banana, and cinnamon)

She will be coming with me during the Disney Marathon weekend extravaganza and has grand plans to run the half-marathon the day before I run the full. So I spent some quality time explaining the fundamentals of running. We covered everything from how to prevent heel striking, what to do with your arms, to why it is important to cross train. I think I have Smutha Mutha convinced about the benefits of cross-training. I worry that she will get injured if she keeps logging mile after mile on the treadmill. Variety is the spice of life, Smutha Mutha.

Arkansas_River_Trail.jpg

(Thanks Wikipedia for the picture. I was too busy sweating to be bothered with photography.)

After taking off my personal trainer hat, I headed to the Arkansas River trail for a mid-length run. The weather was just too perfect to stay in the gym. I snacked on a Fitbloggin’ swag item while I drove to my starting point.

P5260006.JPG

I’ve read a couple other reviews of the 22 Days vegan protein bars, so I had high hopes that this would be scrumptious. I thought the flavor was decent enough and I liked that I could see real pumpkin seeds in the mix, but the bar was a bit greasy. I ate it anyway (go figure), and promptly set off for 7 miles.

It was a decent run thanks to the new Lady Gaga CD. That woman may take creepy pictures but she sure does make some mean running music.

P5260008.JPG

Once I could hear in both ears again, I refueled with a green monster and boatloads of cereal. I should know better than to eat cereal straight from the box. It always leads to overeating…always.

To burn off the excess carb-age I consumed I headed to Target. Without a list.Do you know where this is going? I know Gretchen does.

P5260011.JPG

I blew through a $50 gift card and then some. But on the bright side I got some great stuff!

P5260013.JPG

P5260014.JPG
I also bought a cute dress that I neglected to photograph.

I spent the rest of the night relaxing on the back porch enjoying the weather. These days will soon be a figment of my imagination.

Questions: Does anyone else find Target to be a money suck? I can’t be the only one!

What is your favorite running song of the moment?

12 hours later

Well so much for the ‘post on a schedule’ tidbit I learned at Fitbloggin. Just so all you new readers know (hi!), I normally post first thing in the morning or at least before the clock strikes noon. That was also my intention today but after coming down from the high that was Fitbloggin I crashed hard.

After a large salad for dinner last night I wanted nothing more than to curl up in my bed with a good book.

P5210019.JPG

(Dinner: Mixed greens, spinach, black beans, feta cheese, nutritional yeast, tomato, hummus, salsa, and guacamole)

I read approximately 2 pages before passing out.

Then I slept for 12 hours straight. In truth, I woke up at 8 AM intending to knock out a long run early, but when I checked the weather and saw tornado like conditions brewing I said ‘forget it’ and curled back up in my warm sheets for another 4 hours.

P5220027.JPG

(Iced coffee with unsweetened almond milk and stevia)

P5220032.JPG

(Hello, old friend: Ezekiel bread, 1 tbsp PB, sliced banana, and cinnamon)

Which brings us up to now. As I sit here sipping on iced coffee, munching on my favorite breakfast (ahem, see the header), and mentally preparing myself for a treadmill run (yuck), I can’t help but look back over the past 48 hours and think about how fortunate I was to attend. Fitbloggin changed the way I look at what I previously thought was just a weird hobby. But with the new friendships I have made and the information I have learned, I now know that blogging is not just a hobby, it is my passion.

P5210009.JPG

(So many new products! I’m in heaven!)

But let’s talk about something lighter as I find my thoughts on the whole thing tend to be a bit sappy. Let me share with you the ridiculousness that is my swag pile. Arguably one of the coolest parts of the conference, I still cannot believe how much stuff we all received. The companies who sponsored the conference were very generous, if you could not tell.

P5210014.JPG

(Official taste testing in progress)

Smutha Mutha (my loving nickname for my mother) was all over it. I come by my love of free stuff honestly enough, as she wanted to know about every product, vendor, and sample. Oh Smutha Mutha, I think you were destined to be a product model.

With that, I really must go. This workout is going to be tough, but the only way to get it done is to actually start, so that is what I intend to do!

P.S. Don’t forget to enter my NuNaturals Stevia Giveaway! I will announce the 4 winners tomorrow!

Fitbloggin’ is over already?

I’m super bummed that I have to leave Fitbloggin’ early, but I suppose that is just what you get when you live in the boonies of Arkansas. I have learned my lesson though. Mark my words I will be staying until the very end next year because sitting in an airport while all of my new friends are eating a free lunch just nonsense.

But I’m not dwelling on that. I just have to say that Fitbloggin is one of the coolest things I’ve done in a long time.

P5200025.JPG

Seeing people in real life after reading their blog is utterly bizarre, but once you get over the initial shock and awe conversation flows easily.

I spent the majority of my time at the conference getting to know new bloggers and connecting with those whose blogs I’ve read before.

As much as the sessions were helpful, I found that talking with other bloggers was one of the best ways to learn new things. Good portions of both yesterday and today were spent in the lobby of the hotel with my laptop in hand working on the ‘behind the scenes’ blog stuff. I was the one with the obnoxious 13.1 sticker on my computer (subtle, I know).

After the Friday sessions ended, I attended the social sponsored by Sears that served as the perfect excuse to take pictures with new friends in a different outfit.

(Jen in Real Life…in real life!)

P5200031.JPG

(Me and Gretchen. I kind of love this girl.)

About an hour into the gathering I could take no more. I was seriously hungry so I headed out with a great group to Mo’s Seafood.

P5200046.JPG

My seafood greek salad certainly left a lot to be desired but the conversation more than made up for it. When else can you spend an entire meal talking about Google Reader and blog themes??

I bowed out shortly after dinner as I was completely exhausted. Matt and I were up bright and early for the oatmeal breakfast and more mingling.

P5210001.JPG

Then it was time for a session called “From Hobbyist to Professional: Taking Blogging to the Next Level.” All of the speakers made really interesting points and certainly planted some seeds in my mind about how I can grow A Knack for Nutrition. More than anything I was there to support Jen and Josie because I have been reading their blogs so for long.

P5210004.JPG

They have built entire brands around their respective blogs and it was fascinating to learn more about the process of becoming a ‘professional blogger.’

P5210018.JPG

(Why oh why does this have to be blurry!? Jen: THE Priorfat Girl)

After a short photoshoot among new friends Matt and I headed to the airport. Fitbloggin’ came and went all too fast but I am really grateful to have been a part of it.

(Anne, Matt, and I)

Funny how just 48 hours ago I was full of nervous anticipation and now I am returning with a plethora of new contacts and friends. This community really is something special. Time to go unload 40 pounds of swag!
